The Handcraft Shop at Gordon has a wonderful selection of handmade clothing, giftware and homemaker's items at moderate prices.
The quality is high and the prices are low because the shop is run as a cooperative by about 60 craftspeople who make all the goods.
More than 30 crafts are represented, such as ceramics, pottery, hand-painted porcelain, stained glass, copper enamel, leather work, woodwork, jewellery and silverware.
Soft goods crafts include tapestry, spinning and weaving, tatting, bobbin lace, smocking, embroidery, fine sewing, knitting, silk screening, Shibori-dyed fabrics, applique', patchwork, quilting and silk flowers.
All the goods are Australian-made, mostly by North Shore residents, but some craftspeople live as far afield as Gosford and Jannali.
Peter Campbell, of Belrose, is well known for his sterling silver spoons and candle snuffers. He is believed to be the only Australian using his own English hallmark, proof of his high status and accreditation as a silversmith. His specialties include Apostle spoons, introduced into Britain from the Continent about 1450, each bearing the emblem of an Apostle.
Two other silversmiths represented are Beverley Macpherson and Cynthia Retter, who make jewellery.
Australian flora and fauna are represented on many items, including hand-painted wall plaques and hand-knitted woollen egg warmers.
Baby wear includes personalised, cross-stitched towels and washers featuring the child's name, teddy bears, ducks, and other adornments the customer may nominate when ordering. "They are very popular, and make lovely christening presents," said Mrs Morrison.
The cooperative sets aside 27.5 per cent of its sales income to cover rent and running expenses, and after the craftspeople receive their share, the remaining profit is donated each year to a charity of the members' choice.
The Handcraft Shop is at 2 St John's Avenue, Gordon, opposite the railway station. Inquiries: 498 4918.
